Acts 10:1-48 in the King James and Alternate with Word Pictures and Reiterations Versions

Acts 10

King James Version (KJV)
Alternate Word Pictures with Reiterations (AWPR)

My Comments in Green

1  There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,   (KJV)

1)   Then a certain man was in Caesarea:

       by name, Cornelius;
       a centurion out of a  Speiras -  a Band

[a band of soldiers who make up 1/10th of a Legion's force,
         and is generally between 400 - 600 men ]
       being called - summoned forth as  Italikes - Italian;
well reverent - goodly pious  and fearing GOD
with all the house of him.

2  A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway.   (KJV)

2)    Both doing - performing - producing - bringing about

many acts of mercy and compassion to the people
        [of Israel],
and making his needs known - beseeching - petitioning
        to GOD through all.

3  He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of God coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.   (KJV)

3)    He saw and beheld in a shining and plainly manifest

visual spectacle - supernatural appearance / vision
about (the) 9th hour of the day,
an angel of GOD coming and entering in
up to and alongside next to him,
        and saying to him,

4  And when he looked on him, he was afraid, and said, What is it, Lord? And he said unto him, Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God.   (KJV)

4)    Then he was looking intently to the point of straining,

        gazing intently at him,
and becoming in terror so as to want to run away.

He said, "What is it, sir?"

Then he  [the angel]  said to him,
"The prayers  [to GOD] of you
and the acts of mercy and compassion of you
ascended up - went up into a memorial*
in the face of -  in the presence of - before   GOD.

5  And now send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter:   (KJV)

5)          And now at this present time,  send forth - dispatch

              men into Joppa,
and send forth into the midst of for / and call for
              a certain one:
Simon, who is called upon / surnamed    Petros / Peter.

6  He lodgeth with one Simon a tanner, whose house is by the sea side: he shall tell thee what thou oughtest to do.   (KJV)

6)         This one is a stranger received as a guest

lodged near - in the immediate vicinity of
Simon, a skin - hide tanner / a leather maker,
             to whom is a house
near - in the immediate vicinity of (the) Sea. **

This one will speak to you at random - tell you at random

what  you inevitably or necessarily need to do."

7  And when the angel which spake unto Cornelius was departed, he called two of his household servants, and a devout soldier of them that waited on him continually;   (KJV)

7)    Then, as the angel, the (one) speaking at random to Cornelius

withdrew - departed - went away,
having called out in a loud voice two of the house servants
        of him,
and a well reverent - goodly pious soldier of those
tarrying  and enduring strongly up alongside with him:

8  And when he had declared all these things unto them, he sent them to Joppa.   (KJV)

8)    And having thoroughly narrated and unfolded / made known
        to them all things,
he sent them forth out into Joppa.

9  On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:   (KJV)

9)    Then, upon the morrow - upon the next day,

these traveling by way of the road - highway***

{ Map from:
http://www.bible-history.com/maps/ancient-roads-in-israel.html }

and approaching - coming near to     the city,

Peter ascended up - went up    upon the housetop - rooftop****
to pray round about the 6th hour
        [facing toward Jerusalem].

10  And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance,  (KJV)

10)   Then he became intensely hungry,

and had in mind - intended - desired
to taste and eat (tasty food).

They, then, preparing [the meal]  nearby,
(there) fell over upon him a tranced removal of the mind
so as to stand out and away from itself.

11 And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending upon him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth:   (KJV)

11)   And he gazed and inspected carefully, as a spectator,

         the heaven being open opened,

[opened, and then opened yet again to reveal
something not seen with the naked eye,]

         and a certain implement descending

         and coming down upon him,
so as in what manner like a great white linen sail
         or sheet,
         being bound at 4 corners,
and let down upon the Earth:

12 Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.   (KJV)

12)    In which were all the 4 footed / all the quadrupeds

          of the Earth,
and the [unclean for the Jew to eat ] wild bestial animals,
and the [unclean for the Jew to eat] creeping reptiles,
and the flying birds and fowls of the heaven.

13 And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat.   (KJV)

13)   And it came into being,

a voice up alongside next to him,
            "Rise up Peter.
              Sacrifice  -  Ritually slay,
              and eat."

14 But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean.   (KJV)

14)   Then Peter said,

"But not even someone (like me), LORD,
because I certainly never did eat any kind
(to all and ceremonially unclean defiling thing)."

15 And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.   (KJV)

15)   And a voice back again (spoke) out a second (time)

         up alongside with him,
            "That which GOD has purified
              and (ceremonially) cleansed,
              You may not commonize
              (as ceremonially unclean and defiling)."

16  This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.   (KJV)

16)   Then this came into being - happened upon 3

         (times or occurrences):
and the implement was taken back again
and borne up into the heaven.

17  Now while Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, behold, the men which were sent from Cornelius had made enquiry for Simon's house, and stood before the gate,   (KJV)

17)   Then, as Peter in himself was thoroughly without resource

in how to determine and proceed regarding
what might  be     the / this
visual spectacle - supernatural appearance / vision
         which he saw,
the men having been sent forth out from Cornelius,
having diligently inquired and as equals asked out
         the house of Simon,
stood upon the gate portal / porch of the door.

18  And called, and asked whether Simon, which was surnamed Peter, were lodged there.   (KJV)

18)   And calling / crying out with a loud voice,

         they interrogated out if Simon,
         being called upon as Peter,
is lodged as a stranger here in this place.

19  While Peter thought on the vision, the Spirit said unto him, Behold, three men seek thee.   (KJV)

19)   Then Peter,

in a mind racing with anger - indignation - wrath
around - round about - regarding   the
visual spectacle - supernatural appearance / vision,
         the Spirit said to him,
            "Behold, look and see!
3 men are seeking and striving to find you.

20 Arise therefore, and get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing: for I have sent them.   (KJV)

20)       Yet nevertheless,  rising up, descend and go down;

and passing through, go with them,
distinguishing - deciding - judging   no one,
             for that / simply because
             I have sent them forth."

21 Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?   (KJV)

21)    Then Peter, descending and going down up alongside

with the men --  those sent forth from Cornelius
up alongside next to him -- Peter said,
             "Behold, look and see!
I am whom you seek and strive to find.
What (is the) request through which
you have come to be here?"

22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.   (KJV)

22)   Then they said,

"Cornelius, a centurion, a righteous and just man
               fearing and reverencing GOD,
being witnessed and testified to under
wholly of    the ethnicity - the ethnic people
               of the Jews,
was consulted and warned in a business-like fashion
               under a holy angel
to send for - to dispatch and call for    you
               into the house of him,
and to intently hear and listen to a discourse of words
near to you / in your proximity / in your presence."

23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.   (KJV)

23)   Thereupon calling and inviting them in,

he lodged - received (them) as his guests.

Then upon the morrow - upon the next day,

Peter went forth out together with them,
and certain ones of the brothers of him from Joppa
         came together and accompanied him.

24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and he had called together his kinsmen and near friends.  (KJV)

24)   And upon the morrow - upon the next day,

they came and entered into Caesarea.

Then Cornelius was looking and waiting
up to and alongside next to them,
having called forth and summoned together
the family and relations of him,
and the necessary - near and intimate  friends.

25 And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.   (KJV)

25)    Then when it came into being - when it happened

(that) Peter (was)  coming and entering in,
Cornelius meeting with him (did so)
          falling down upon the feet,
kissed up alongside and worshipped. *****

26 But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.   (KJV)

26)    Then Peter raised him,

          laying down definite words, saying,
"Stand up again!   I myself am also a man."

27 And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.   (KJV)

27)  And talking - conversing  together with him,

        he came and entered,
and finds many having come together.

28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.   (KJV)

28)   And utters up alongside with them,

"You stand over - understand - comprehend
how unlawful - lawless   it is for a man, a Jew,
to cleave and adhere to - to join, accompany, unite with /
(or) to approach and go up alongside with
another tribe - race - lineage

[of another's nation's people with a common founding
                ancestor alien  from one's own].

But GOD exhibited - displayed - showed to me
not to call - not to lay down and recount
(even) one man (as) common or unclean.

29 Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me?   (KJV)

29)       And through (this) I came
             without disputing - without complaining,
being dispatched for - being sent for - being summoned for.

I directly examine and ask in like manner,
for which - for what    intelligent reason
you sent and dispatched for me?"

30 And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing,   (KJV)

30)   And Cornelius answered,
"From (the) 4th day until ending this hour,
              I have been fasting;
and the 9th hour (I) was up alongside in prayer
              in the house of me.

              And behold, look and see!
A man stood as set in place
in the face of - in the presence of - before  me
in dazzlingly shining bright radiant white clothing.

31 And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.   (KJV)

31)       And affirmingly utters,
'Cornelius, the prayer of you was intently heard
                   and listened to,
and the alms of merciful charity of you
                   were recalled / remembered
in the face of - in the presence of - before   GOD.

32 Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee.   (KJV)

32)       Dispatch and send, therefore, into Joppa:
and call and summon for Simon,
who is called upon / surnamed   (as)  Peter.

This one is a guest - a stranger
lodged in the house of Simon,
              a skin - hide tanner / a leather maker
near - in the immediate vicinity of
              (the) [Mediterranean]  Sea,
              who having come and arrived
will speak at random to you.'

33 Immediately therefore I sent to thee; and thou hast well done that thou art come. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.   (KJV)

33)        From out of this, therefore,
              I sent - dispatched up alongside with you;
and you did well having come and arrived
              (to be present [here]).
              Now therefore,
all we in the face of - in the presence of - before    GOD
are to be near and present to listen intently and to hear
              all the arrangements and appointments
up alongside with you, under GOD."

34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:   (KJV)

34)   Then Peter opening again the mouth, said,
"Upon (the) true reality of things as they really are /
              Upon (the) truth,
I have down taken - laid hold of and seized
              in perception and comprehension
that GOD is certainly not a
taker - acceptor - receiver of faces,

35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.   (KJV)

35)       But in every ethnic nation he fearing and reverencing Him,
             and actively working and performing

[the social and Divine standard of]
righteousness is favorably acceptable to Him.

36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:)   (KJV)

36)       The intelligent word which He sent forth out to the
             Sons of Israel,
evangelizing - preaching and proclaiming the Gospel
             of Peace

[of good health, prosperity, safety, and well-being of
               every good kind]

              through Jesus Christ:
this One is LORD - Master / YHVeH of all.

37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;   (KJV)

37)       You know and perceive the
pronouncement - statement - spoken word
that was made - that came into being
down in (the) whole of Judea,
beginning from Galilee after the Baptism which John
              publicly announced - heralded - proclaimed -
              preached and taught;

38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.   (KJV)

38)       Jesus, the (One) from Nazareth,
how GOD anointed Him with (the) Holy Spirit
and with power - ability - capability:
who went and passed through as a benefactor,
doing good and conferring benefits and
healing - curing - restoring bodies to health
(and healing - saving from the consequences of sin)
all those ruled down upon harshly and tyrannized
             under the Devil;
             because GOD was with Him.

39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:   (KJV)

39)       And we are witnesses - martyrs of all things which He
brought about - performed - did     in both the
country - land - region - province   of the Jews,
             and in Jerusalem;
whom they did take up and away to slay - murder
             by suspending - hanging *******
upon wood - upon a tree
             [upon the Cross].

40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;   (KJV)

40)       This One GOD raised up (and set upright) the 3rd Day,
and of His own good will and accord gave Him
to become visible - made apparent

             ["in illuminated", so as to be seen with the naked eye];

41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.   (KJV)

41)       Certainly not to all the people,
             but to witnesses - martyrs,
those having been chosen and appointed (to office)
by outstretched hands beforehand under GOD,
who to us ate and had communion together with
             and drank together with Him
after the rising again (of) Him
out of (the) dead - out of (the) corpse.

42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.   (KJV)

42)      And He announced to - declared by order to - commanded
us to publicly announce - herald - proclaim publicly -
preach and teach to the people,
and to earnestly bear witness and affirm that it is He
who has been marked out as a boundary,
            (even in respect to time),
under GOD (as) Judge of (the) Living and (the) Dead.

43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.   (KJV)

43)       To this One all the prophets testify - bear witness
to take, accept, receive forgiveness of sins
             through the Name of Him,
everyone trusting and believing into Him."

44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.   (KJV)

44)    (As) Peter (was) still yet speaking at random these words,
          the Holy Spirit fell upon,
upon all those listening and hearing intently
          the intelligent word.

45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.   (KJV)

45)   And were standing out as beside themselves in amazement
         those out of Circumcision's faithful.
as many as came and accompanied together with Peter,
because also upon the ethnic nations
the free (supernatural) gift of the Holy Spirit
was (generously) spilled out - poured out.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,   (KJV)

46)   Because they intently listened to and heard them speaking
at random in tongues - languages,
and making great and strong / magnifying     GOD.

When at what time, Peter discerningly answered discreetly,

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?   (KJV)

47)      "Perhaps not at all is anyone able - capable
to forbid - hinder - cut off - restrain    these
to perhaps not be baptized (in) the running water,
who the Holy Spirit has actively taken and received
according as - even as   we also?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.   (KJV)

48)   And he set in order by command -  And he arranged
them to be baptized in the Name of the LORD.

Then they requested him as an equal
to stay and remain upon (longer) some certain days.

* Compare Revelation 8:3-4
3And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.    (KJV)

  (3)   And another angel of the same kind

and stood fast upon the Sacrificial Altar
         having - possessing a frankincense vessel / censer made of gold;
and was given - bestowed - entrusted to him many incenses,
in order that he should give / offer
with the prayers - petitions / requests - vows
of all the holy set apart saints

in the face of - in the presence of - before the Throne.    (AWPR)

4And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints, ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.    (KJV)

 (4)   And ascended / went up the smoke of the incense

        with the prayers - petitions/requests - vows

of the holy set apart saints

out of the (extended) hand of the angel
in the face of - in the presence of - before GOD.     (AWPR)

**   In other words, the house of Simon the tanner is directly on the beach or at the beach-line down on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea.

***  Rather than traveling by the most immediate and direct north to south coastal road, instead, Peter traveled inland and took a much longer winding route that made it a much longer journey.  Hence, Peter went the longer inland road system that avoided the direct coastal road, and this appears to be because it was unlawful for a Jew to journey with Gentiles not of the faith, as indicated in verse 28.

****  The rooftop being flat and horizontal, and used as a place to dry out foods such as dates and figs, as well be used as an open air porch that could easily be affixed with a canopy area on sunny and hot days that were not too windy.  Such a rooftop practice goes back at least as far as King David and his rebellious son Absalom in the 11th Century B.C.

*****  The kissing up alongside is a popular greeting in some Western European countries, whereas one kisses alongside the cheek so that one may hear in the ear the sound of the kiss or greeting thereof such as a "mmmmuh".  In Cornelius case, he fell to the feet and made such as sound to the outer sides of Peter's feet, as if he were in the custom or the protocol expected of a Roman centurion recognizing one of the Roman gods visiting mankind.
