1   After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. (KJV)

1)     After these things (there) was a Feast - Holiday Festival
        of the Judeans - of the Jews,
        and Jesus - Yeshua  
        went up - ascended  [by ascending the winding road from Jericho]
        into Jerusalem.

² Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.    (KJV)

2)  Then is in Jerusalem

         [the author speaks as though to say, "Currently in Jerusalem"; 
          this wording dates the Gospel of John as pre-70 A.D.]

     upon the walk ahead animals gate or market -
     upon the sheep and goat market - upon the sheep gate

     a swimming pool - a swimming place
     which (is) spoken upon in Hebrew as Bethesda 
   
     [one manuscript suggests Beth-sada "the house of marching", 
       which relates to the Hebrew "halicho" and being in joyful step
       or motion with the Torah and with the Almighty] 

     having - holding - possessing    5 Stoas - 5 Porches.

³ In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water.   (KJV) 

3)   In these ones were laid out or reclined 
      a numerous multitude - a plenteous throng - a many fullness
      of the weak - feeble - sick - infirm,
      the blind, lame / maimed, dried up - withered,
      watching out in anticipation expecting to receive
      the motioning - the agitating movement 
      of the water.

⁴ For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.   (KJV)

4)   Because down through a time,
      an angel descended down 
      in the swimming pool - in the swimming place
      and agitated - turned over - stirred up - troubled 
      the water.

      Accordingly / Thereupon   he [who was]  first 
      going into - entering into  [the pool]
      after the agitation - turning over - troubling  of the water
      became healthy - whole and sound in health
      to whatsoever then   sickness - disease
      he was held fast and held down by.

5)    Then a certain man was there,
       having - holding - possessing  and continuing to possess
       a weakness - sickness - infirmity     38 years.

⁶ When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole?   (KJV)

6)   Jesus - Yeshua,  beholding and perceiving this one
      lying down - laying out - reclining
      and knowing   [by observation]    
      that he has held and possessed [spent]
      much time,  even now - already,
      lays down definite words and says to him,
            'Do you   desire - intend - have in mind - have the purpose
             to become  healthy - whole and sound in health?'

⁷ The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.   (KJV)

7)   The sick and feeble one discerning answered Him,
            'Lord - Master, 
             I certainly do not have or possess a man
             in order that whensoever the water is 
             agitated - turned over - troubled 
             that he cast and throw me into the swimming pool,
             (that) in which then I am coming to enter,
              another before me descends down into.'

⁸ Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.   (KJV)

8)    Jesus lays down definite words and says to him,
             'Rise up from lying down.
              Take up and carry away the 
              [thin]  mattress - thick quilt - bed   of you,
              and walk around - walk about!'

⁹ And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.  (KJV)   

9)    And straightway - immediately  the man came into being
       healthy - whole and sound in health,
       and took up and carried away the 
       [thin]  mattress - thick quilt - bed  of him
       and walked around - walked about.

       It was then Shabbat  - It was then a Sabbath
       in - on     that there one day.

¹⁰ The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed.    (KJV)

10)  Thereupon - Accordingly - Therefore
       the Judeans certainly laid down definite words and said
       to [the man] having been waited upon and healed 
              'It is Shabbat!  - It is (the) Sabbath!
               It is certainly not to be permissible - right - lawful
               for you to pick up and carry away the 
               [thin]  mattress - thick quilt - bed.'

¹¹ He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.   (KJV)

11)  He discerningly answered them,
            'He making me healthy - whole and sound in health,
             that One said to me,  

              "Take up and carry away the 

                [thin]  mattress - thick quilt - bed   of you,

                   and walk around - walk about!" '

12)   Thereupon they asked him as equals,
             'Who is the man who
              directed - told - commanded you,
               "Take up and carry away the 

                [thin]  mattress - thick quilt - bed   of you,

                   and walk around - walk about!" ?

¹³ And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.    (KJV)

13)   He then, (who was) cured and restored to health
        certainly did not know or perceive who it is,
        because a [confused and pressing] crowd - multitude -throng
        being in the place, Jesus - Yeshua 
        
        nodded and shook off out from - 
        threw his head about and withdrew away.

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.     (KJV)

14)   After these things, Jesus - Yeshua finds him in the Temple,
        and said to him,
             'Behold, see and perceive:
              you have become   healthy - whole and sound in health.

              Sin no more, in order that  
              a worse - a more severe - a more grievous

              thing may not happen to you.'

¹⁵ The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole.     (KJV)

15)    The man departed and went away,
         and announced and made known to the Judeans 
         that Jesus - Yeshua   
         is He making him   healthy - whole and sound in health.

¹⁶ And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.    (KJV)

16)    And through this one the Judeans - the Jews
         followed after - pursued - persecuted   Jesus - Yeshua,
         and sought and strove to (immediately) destroy and kill Him,
         because He  did - performed - brought about
         these things     on Shabbat - on a Sabbath.
